The ritual

Six steps, in order

This is the Signature session, with the time each step takes. Express runs 45 minutes and Long runs 90; the extra time goes to the massage and the dry.

  1. 01
    5 min

    Step 1: Scalp check

We part your hair in a few places and look at your scalp, then ask about your hair, what you use on it and anything that bothers you.

  2. 02
    10 min

    Step 2: Cleanse

A gentle scrub and a shampoo at the basin in warm water, with a comb worked through to the ends.

  3. 03
    25 min

    Step 3: Massage

Slow, steady pressure with the fingertips across the scalp, behind the ears and down the neck. Say lighter or firmer whenever you like.

  4. 04
    8 min

    Step 4: Rinse

A long, unhurried rinse with the chair reclined and a warm towel under your neck, until the water runs clear.

  5. 05
    7 min

    Step 5: Dry

A towel dry, then a blow dry with your hair parted the way you wear it. If you would rather air dry, say so.

  6. 06
    5 min

    Step 6: Rest

A cup of tea and a few minutes in the chair before you sit up and go back to your day.

Every hair type

Straight, wavy, curly, coily, braided or locked

We work with the hair you have: long or short, fine or thick, natural or colored. Tell us how you wear it and we plan the comb, the water and the dry around it.

  • A wide-tooth comb and slow detangling for curls and coils

  • Braids, locs and twists are cleansed in place, never taken down

  • Long and thick hair gets more time to rinse and dry

  • Colored hair is washed gently, with the water as warm or as cool as you like

Before you come

Nothing to prepare

Come as you are. These three things make the hour easier.

  • Come with your hair as it is

No need to wash or style it first. If you have product in it, we wash it out.

  • Wear a top that can get damp

We give you a cape and towels, but a wide or open neckline is easier to work around than a high collar.

  • Tell us what helps

Say if you prefer lighter pressure, quiet, or a cooler rinse. You can change your mind during the session.

Questions before you book

Do I need to wash my hair first?

No. Come with your hair as it is. The first step is a scalp check, and the cleanse comes after it.

What is a head spa?

A session of scalp care: a scalp check, a cleanse at the basin, a long massage, a rinse and a dry. It is for rest and for looking after your scalp, not a treatment for a condition.

Is my hair type welcome?

Yes: straight, wavy, curly, coily, braided, locked or twisted, long or short. Tell us how you wear it when you book and we plan the time around it.

I have a sensitive or irritated scalp. Can I book?

Tell us when you book. If we see something at the scalp check that we can't speak to, we will suggest you see your doctor or a dermatologist before we go on.

Can I choose the pressure?

Yes. Say lighter or firmer at any point, and we will change it. You can also ask us to stop.

How do I move or cancel a session?

Tell us at least 24 hours ahead and we will move it without any trouble. The policies page says what happens with shorter notice.
